New Jersey to legalize medical marijuana

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

New Jersey’s state legislature has passed a bill that will legalize medicinal marijuana for patients with chronic disease. The state’s outgoing Governor, Jon Corzine, said that he will sign the bill before he leaves office next week. Upon passage of the bill, New Jersey will become the 14th state in the nation to permit medical marijuana.

Patients with a prescription would be able to purchase up to 2 ounces (56.7 grams) of cannabis per month. The bill specifies that only certain chronic diseases are eligible, ALS, AIDS, cancer, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis. The bill specifically bans the unlicensed growing of cannabis, driving under the influence of the drug, and only allows six licensed dispensaries in the state.

One of the supporters of the bill, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora said that “I truly believe this will become a model for other states because it balances the compassionate use of medical marijuana while limiting the number of ailments that a physician can prescribe it for”.

Opponents of the bill point to California where they say that cannabis is too loosely regulated. Governor-elect Chris Christie said that “I think we all see what’s happened in California,” he said. “It’s gotten completely out of control.”

Since early ages, boots have emerged as the most widely used type of shoe among both the sexes. There are boots for both men as well as women, but it is more widely used among the masculine community. Boots have a lot of great characteristics which make them suitable for any type of use. There are different types of boots based on the design, style, type of material used, its texture etc. It is interesting that boots are classified on the basis of the height as well. Market maker Bernard L. Madoff arrested in $50B ‘giant Ponzi scheme’

Correction — January 10, 2009 This article incorrectly states that Mr Madoff attended Hofstra University Law School. His education was actually with Hofstra College, which he graduated from in 1960.

Friday, December 12, 2008

Top broker and Wall Street adviser Bernard L. Madoff, aged 70, was arrested and charged by the FBI on Thursday with a single count of securities fraud, also known as stock fraud and investment fraud. He allegedly told senior employees of his firm on Wednesday that his $50 billion business “is all just one big lie” and that it was “basically, a giant Ponzi scheme (since at least 2005).” Mr. Madoff faces up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $5 million. FBI agent Theodore Cacioppi said Mr. Madoff’s investment advisory business had “deceived investors by operating a securities business in which he traded and lost investor money, and then paid certain investors purported returns on investment with the principal received from other, different investors, which resulted in investors’ losses of approximately $50 billion dollars.”

The former chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market is also the founder and primary owner of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, the closely-held market-making firm he launched in 1960. The firm is one of the top market maker firms on Wall Street. He founded his family firm with an initial investment of $5,000, after attending Hofstra University Law School. He saved the money earned from a job lifeguarding at Rockaway Beach in Queens and a part time job installing underground sprinkler systems.

A force in Wall Street trading for nearly 50 years, he has been active in the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), a self-regulatory organization for the U.S. securities industry. His firm was one of the five most active firms in the development of the NASDAQ, having been known for “paying for order flow,” in other word paying a broker to execute a customer’s order through Madoff. He argued that the payment to the broker did not alter the price that the customer received. He ran the investment advisory as a secretive business, however.

Dan Horwitz, counsel of Mr. Madoff, in an interview, said that “he is a longstanding leader in the financial-services industry with an unblemished record; he is a person of integrity; he intends to fight to get through this unfortunate event.” Mr. Madoff was released on his own recognizance on the same day of his arrest, after his 2 sons turned him in, and posting $10 million bail secured by his Manhattan apartment. Without entering any plea, the Court set the preliminary hearing for January 12.

Madoff’s hedge fund scheme may rank among the biggest fraud in history. When former energy trading giant Enron filed for bankruptcy in 2001, one of the largest at the time, it had $63.4 billion in assets. The scheme would dwarf past Ponzis, and it would further be nearly five times the telecommunication company WorldCom fraud and bankruptcy proceedings in 2002.

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a separate civil suit on Thursday against Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities and its eponymous founder Mr. Madoff. It was docketed as “U.S. v. Madoff,” 08-MAG-02735, by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan). SEC, New York associate director of enforcement, Andrew M. Calamari, asked the judge to issue seizure orders on the firm and its assets, and appoint a receiver. The SEC pleads, among others, that “it was an ongoing $50 billion swindle; our complaint alleges a stunning fraud that appears to be of epic proportions.” It further accused the defendant of “paying returns to certain investors out of the principal received from other, different investors” for years. Madoff’s hedge fund business had previously claimed to have served between 11 and 25 clients and had $17.1 billion in assets under management. But virtually all of the assets were missing.

United States District Court for the Southern District of New York Louis L. Stanton on Thursday appointed Lee Richards, a Manhattan lawyer, as the firm’s receiver. A hearing is set for Friday, for a ruling on the SEC’s petition to grant plenary powers to the receiver over the entire firm, and an absolute asset sequestration.

Doug Kass, president of hedge fund Seabreeze Partners Management said that “this is a major blow to confidence that is already shattered — anyone on the fence will probably try to take their money out.”

Arson charge for man who cleaned home with gasoline

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Ernest Krajniak from Chilton, Wisconsin in the United States has been charged with arson after a lit cigarette ignited gasoline soaked clothes, setting his apartment ablaze.

On Friday April 3, Krajniak, 47, cleaned his entire apartment with about five gallons of gasoline, wiping everything down with the soaked clothes. After he was finished, he piled the soaked clothes in the center of his bedroom, lit a cigarette and then threw what was left of the still lit cigarette, into the pile.

Krajniak never called the fire department and never pulled the alarm. Instead he yelled ‘fire’ a few times then walked to the police station where an ambulance took him to a local hospital for the treatment of minor burns. The fire department later arrived to put out the blaze and his apartment was extensively smoke damaged. 11 other apartments were also damaged, leaving the occupants without a place to stay for at least a week.

“I should have never used that,” said Krajniak during a court appearance on Monday. He admitted to knowing that gasoline was highly flammable. He was arrested and his bond has been set a US$2,500. Krajniak’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, April 13. According to WISinfo.com, Krajniak has no prior criminal record.

The careless smoking of cigarettes has been blamed for thousands of fires across the U.S. In January 2008, an unnamed elderly woman in Buffalo, New York was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette and began to smoke it. The oxygen coming from her mask then facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

In the U.S. in 2002, only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

Study says dogs can smell lung and breast cancer

Monday, August 7, 2006

Dogs can be trained to detect early and late stages of lung and breast cancer accurately according to a study published by California scientists in the little-known scientific journal Integrative Cancer Therapies.

The study took place over the last five years at the Pine Street Foundation, a non-profit organization which conducts evidence-based research on integrative medicine (combining complementary and alternative medicine and mainstream medicine). Michael McCulloch and colleagues used three Labrador Retrievers and two Portuguese Water Dogs, both common pets, that received basic behavioral dog training. The researchers trained the dogs to lie down next to a sample from a cancer patient and to ignore other samples.

The samples used were breath samples from 55 patients with lung cancer and 31 with breast cancer — the two types of cancer with the highest mortality rates in the United States.

After the training phase, the dogs’ accuracy diagnosis was tested in a double-blind experiment. Among lung cancer patients, the sensitivity and specificity were 99% accurate and for breast cancer sensitivity was 88% and specificity 98%. Because these figures seem almost too good to be true, cancer experts are the same time baffled and skeptical. The authors of the study themselves also say replication of the study is needed.

Importantly, this was independent of the cancer stage, meaning the dogs were able to pick up the scent of cancer in its early stages. This is important because in many cases, the success of any treatment depends on early diagnosis. However, the researchers don’t believe this will lead to the use of dogs in the clinic soon, rather they want to find out which chemicals are actually sensed by the canines, because they could be used in laboratory assays. “It’s not like someone would start chemotherapy based on a dog test,” Dr. Gansler of the American Cancer Society said, “They’d still get a biopsy.”.

The researchers were inspired by anecdotal reports about dogs detecting cancer. In 1989, a British women consulted with her family physician because her Dalmatian kept licking a mole on her leg. At biopsy it showed to be malignant melanoma. When diagnosed too late this form of cancer has a poor survival rate, but in this case early surgery was made possible, and the women survived. Prior studies showed that breath samples from patients with lung cancer or breast cancer contain distinct biochemical markers. This provides a basis for the hypothesis that some cancer types produce volatile chemicals that dogs could smell. A study published in the British Medical Journal already proved that dogs could use their exquisite sense of smell to detect bladder cancer in urine samples, but they were only correct in 41% of cases, and another study provided preliminary evidence that dogs could detect melanomas.

This doesn’t mean you can show your breasts to your dog and it will tell you if you have cancer, other physicians caution, and scientists do not advise people to train their dogs to sniff for cancer. Unresolved issues from the study include the fact that subjects were required to breathe deeper than normal, so it’s not sure whether dogs can smell cancer in normal breath. Also, whether this is a permanent skill that would be retained by dogs was not tested.

Finally, there are concerns that could arise over liability issues: who would be responsible when the dog makes a mistake?

Current detection methods for both lung and breast cancer are not flawless. For lung cancer, chest X-ray and sputum cytology (detecting cancer cells in coughed up fluid) fail to detect many early cases, and CT scan produces many false-positive results unless combined with expensive PET scans. Although it might be comparing apples and oranges, a $2.5 million CT scanner has an accuracy of 85 to 90%. Mammography also produces false-positive results, and it may be difficult in women with dense breast tissue. As such, another type of “pet”-scan, using dogs as a biological assay, might prove feasible for screening if supported by further research. Current tests are also expensive so the use of dogs for preliminary cancer testing could prove to be an affordable alternative for countries in the developing world.

11 Things Your Podiatrist Really Wishes You Wouldnt Do}

11 Things Your Podiatrist Really Wishes You Wouldnt Do

Lifootcare

As runners, our most valuable possessions are our feet. And while our tootsies may not win any beauty contests (hello, black toenails and blisters galore), their overall health is crucial, as it impacts our entire skeletal structure, explains Dr. Jacqueline Sutera, D.P.M. and spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association. Turns out, there are lots of little things we do everyday that set us back on this front.

Here, Sutera and two other podiatrists share the widely-practiced, surprisingly harmful habits that damage our feet”and what we should do instead.

Cutting out an Ingrown Toenail Yourself

Why Its Bad: Almost everyone will suffer from an ingrown toenail during their life, whether it be the result of an injury, poor fitting shoes, or genetics, explains Dr. Amanda Meszaros, an Ohio-based podiatrist. Many will attempt to resolve the issue with bathroom surgery, i.e. an at-home, self-directed procedure, often performed with non-sterile, ineffective instruments. A common result: a splinter that will fester, cause an infection, or trigger a fleshy growth called pyogenic granuloma that results from minor trauma.

What to Do Instead: Seek professional help early, advises Meszaros, noting that in-office treatment is easy, simple, and offers quick relief of symptoms.

Running a Race or Distance Run in a New Pair of Shoes

Why Its Bad: I see many runners who get close to a race and think Oh crap, I better get a new pair of sneakers! says Dr. Lori Weisenfeld, NYC sports podiatrist. But even if you purchase the exact same model, running in fresh sneaks can give you blisters and/or shin splints simply because they havent been broken in yet. I tell patients to never opt for new shoes in a competitive or distance situation, explains Weisenfeld.

What to Do Instead: Once you find a sneaker brand and model that works well for you, purchase several pairs and alternate usage, advises Weisenfeld. This means youll always have a backup come race day.

Committing to One Shoe Size

Why Its Bad: Its a common misconception that once you reach adulthood, your shoe size is set in stone. Many of us buy the same shoe size year after year without regard to structural changes, and attribute new discomfort to simply aging or wear and tear, says Meszaros. But as we get older, she explains, our ligaments and tendons become more lax, our arch height decreases, and the shock absorbing fat that pads our feet thins and atrophies, especially in women.

Whats more, people over 40 will generally gain length over time as well”up to half a shoe size per decade of life.

What to Do Instead: Consider periodic professional measurement, recommends Meszaros. Also, rather than automatically purchasing your go-to number, test out new kicks in-store, and become aware of the variances in size by brand.

Fitting Your Street Shoes the Same as Your Athletic Shoes

Why Its Bad: Athletic shoes shouldnt fit as snugly as street shoes, explains Weisenfeld, because your feet need more wiggle room when engaging in physical activity. Wearing tight-fitting shoes can cause pain and damage your toenails.

What to Do Instead: When it comes to running shoes, Weisenfeld abides by the rule of thumb, which dictates a thumbs width distance between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. If your toes are closer to the edge, try the next size up.

Wearing Flats on a Regular Basis

Why Its Bad: Many women turn to flats as an alternative at work or for a commute on foot, says Meszaros, acknowledging the shoes are lightweight, portable and flexible. But these convenient shoes have little to offer in the way of shock absorption and cause increased pressure on the ball of the foot and heel even with moderate walking. That lack of support can translate into heel pain from repetitive stress, tendonitis from lack of stability, metatarsalgia (forefoot pain) and stress fractures.

What to Do Instead: Although athletic shoes with professional attire are frowned upon from a fashion standpoint, newer options in lightweight sport-style shoes in more desirable colors and patterns may provide increased cushioning and less risk of fatigue related injuries, recommends Meszaros.

Walking Barefoot on Hardwood Floors

Why Its Bad: When treading on hardwood, cement, stone, or ceramic tile, there is really nothing to absorb the shock between you and the ground, explains Sutera. Over time, this behavior can deteriorate your fat pad, which serves as the foots natural cushion. Again, women should be especially cognizant of fat pad atrophy, Sutera explains, as theyre more likely to develop it due to hormone changes.

What to Do Instead: Limit your barefoot time to carpet or cork flooring only, and wear comfortable, supportive footgear when on harder indoor surfaces. Suteras at-home go-to: plush slippers with a cushy arch support.

Wearing Worn-Out Shoes

Why Its Bad: Wearing worn-down footwear that doesnt offer the proper support can hurt not just your feet, but your entire skeleton, reiterates Sutera. When a shoe is old and worn out, it tilts the way that you stand and walk, and can force your foot to land in a way thats unnatural and damaging. Suteras response to patients who are reluctant to retire well-worn, cloyingly comfy footwear: Fast food tastes good, but its not good for you. Your favorite old shoes may be harming your health.

What to Do Instead: Determine your shoe health with the tabletop test, says Sutera. Place your footwear on the table and examine it at eye level. If the heel is noticeably worn down and/or deformed, its time for a new pair.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Can Hair Tonics Treat Hair Loss And Thinning Hair?

By Danielle McLoughlin

A few decades ago, hair tonics were very popular in styling hair but they have been replaced by products such as gel, serums and mousse. They are scantily available at some salons and drug stores, for the die-hard fans. These days, hair tonics have been made so that they perform more functions than giving hair a shiny appearance and holding it in place. Modern day tonics contain ingredients that combat hair loss and thinning.

The hair is the crowning beauty of a woman. Unfortunately this beauty may fall or thin due to several factors like stress, pregnancy, medication, diet deficiencies, strain on the follicles due to tight hairstyles and fatigue. Loss of hair can affect a woman in many different ways. That is why solutions to thinning and losing hair are being sought daily.

It is important to understand the reason hair is falling out or becoming thin. Hair loss caused by stress, medication, pregnancy, illness, and diet deficiencies usually stops once the pregnancy, stress etc is over. Eating a healthy diet rich in protein usually restores hair to its original condition in a few weeks. If the cause of thinning is due to tight hairstyles then finding a new way to style the hair will reduce the strain on hair follicles and allow them to recover.

Hair tonics strengthen weak hair and in so doing makes it more resilient and less likely to break. They can also contain vital ingredients to boost hair growth by reviving slugging follicles. Some hair tonics that are believed to reduce hair loss and stop thinning are:

Rene Furterer RF80 – this is a patented plant based formula that is very effective for treating thinning and weak hair. It is enriched with plant peptides and vitamins which restore the scalp’s nutrition to give hair more body and shine. RF80 should be used once a week for three months. After the scalp has been cleaned, apply it evenly onto each part. Massage the scalp to aid penetration and blood circulation. A test was carried out on women using this product and the results were overwhelming. In three months, 78% reported that their hair had been strengthened.

Plantur 39 caffeine tonic is a leave-in tonic designed to treat hair loss in women. Its main target is women who have reached their menopause. It contains caffeine derived from plant based sources which stimulates hair follicles to increase the rate at which hair is growing. As hormones are responsible for the menopause, Plantur 39 caffeine also offers hormonal balance to the hair and scalp. This hair tonic is so mild it can be used as an everyday treatment. In addition to treating hair loss and thinning, it also treats other scalp problems like oily scalp and itching and is safe for use by men and women with male or female pattern balding.

For maximum benefits from hair tonics, apply to a clean scalp and use them as directed by the manufacturer. Always massage the tonic into the scalp. Massaging the scalp helps to evenly distribute the tonic to the entire scalp while stimulating blood circulation. Do not be tempted to apply too much tonic as it will leave your hair greasy, and mess your clothing and bedding.

About the Author: Both

Rene Furterer RF80 tonic

and

Plantur 39 Caffeine tonic

are best applied as part of an overall strategy to combat thinning hair or hair loss.
