Stage collapse at Canadian “Big Valley Jamboree” kills one, and seriously injures four others

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Two probes have been initiated into the collapse of the Big Valley Jamboree stage which killed one person, placed four others in the critical care unit and caused injuries to 75 others in Camrose, Alberta located in Canada.

“We are trying to determine from what is left of the evidence what damage was done by the wind and what damage was down by rescue workers. We may not be able to make that determination. So that is going to hamper things. It will be tougher,” Chris Chodan, spokesman for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.

Panhandle Productions has brought in independent investigators to determine why the stage collapsed and to collect evidence. Due to the large number of people trapped under the stage the evidence had to be moved for rescue operations.

The stage collapsed shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time on Saturday killing 35-year-old Donna Moore, who was attending the festival from Lloydminster. Premier Global Productions supplies the stage for the event, which are transported from venue to venue in sections via three semi trailers. “It’s their stage. In fact, I know this stage has been used by Paul McCartney, it’s been used by Metallica, and by Tim McGraw on tour.” said Larry Werner the producer from Panhandle Productions.

The stage is suspected to have been brought down by a phenomenon called plough wind, which produces winds similar to a tornado. This particular front hit speeds greater than 100 km/hr (62 mi/hr). A plough wind travels in narrow straight line paths rather than in circular formations, but causes damage similar to that inflicted by a tornado.

Alberta Municipal Affairs has initiated their investigation into the engineering specifications of the stage and emergency procedures. Alberta occupational health and safety is investigating building codes.

The Big Valley Jamboree is a large annual country music festival located in Camrose, Alberta, Canada which sees 25,000 people attending the four day event.

Australian Paralympians cycling around Fiji for people with disabilities

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Two Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketball players, Shelley Chaplin and Leanne Del Toso, are cycling around Fiji to raise money for people in Fiji with disabilities. They hope to cover the route, which is roughly 500 kilometers (300 miles) long, in just ten days. They started on June 7, 2013 and plan to finish by June 16.

Along the way, they intend to do outreach, and mentor people with disabilities. They hope to raise A$13,000. So far, they have raised over A$12,400. They are using crowdfunding to finance their sporting event.

Del Toso suffered muscle deterioration in her legs and hands due to a degenerative neurological condition when she was 19, and rides her bike with the aid of orthotics. Chaplin was born a paraplegic, and is using a handcycle.

They won silver medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London with the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team, commonly known as the Gliders.

Both also played for Victoria in Round One of the Australia Women’s Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) competition last weekend. Victoria won all four of its games. They expect to be back in action again in Round Two in Perth on June 21–23.

Bosch Induction Hobs

Induction hobs work by a powerful electromagnetic field inducing a current that generates instant heat inside the pan. This can cause a little bit of an inconvenience if your pans are not the right type though. Only pans made of ferrous metal are suitable for use on this hob – simply test your pans with a magnet – if it sticks to the base then they are suitable for induction cooking. If not, then you may have to buy new pans or go for a different type of hob.Boschs range of three and four induction zone hobs mainly come in size 60cm, but out of the six Bosch induction hobs available; there are two models that are extra wide 80cm induction hobs. The only difference between the two extra wide induction hobs is that one has a brushed steel frame and the other has no frame at all. This difference has no real practical advantage or disadvantage, but is more of a personal preference as to which you think looks the best and will fit in with the kitchen. The extra wide hobs both have four induction zones on black ceramic glass. There is a slight difference in dimensions, in that one is 2mm deeper than the other, but in terms of key features, they are almost the same.Bosch induction hobs are packed full of features and functions that are designed to make cooking easier and less stressful. The hobs have boost settings for all zones, which mean that the power output of the selected zone is increased by 50%, by borrowing power from one of the other cooking zones, which then cannot be used. This function is particularly useful for stir frying with a wok, or making toffee or anything that requires a particularly high heat.A clever feature that saves time and particularly energy is the automatic pan recognition where the hob realises how big the pan is that is being used and only heats up the base of the pan and not the whole cooking zone. The keep warm function allows a cooking zone to be set to operate at minimum power so that you can keep food warm on the hob or for things need to be melted slowly such as butter or chocolate. The anti-overflow protection means that if liquid overflows onto the control panel whilst you are boiling something, the hob will automatically switch off so that the hob does not get damaged and you have the opportunity to clean up.There are also a number of safety devices in place to prevent accidents in the kitchen. Bosch induction hobs are available with small utensil detection so that if you leave an item of cutlery over a zone when it is turned on, the hob will not recognise it as being a cooking utensil that you would normally use on the hob and will automatically switch off. Given the heat that some of the hobs get to, this can only be a good thing to avoid melted and deformed cutlery being a new addition to your kitchen. Many of the Bosch induction hobs also have an automatic shut off feature for when the hob has been left unattended for a certain period of time and some, but not all, models have child locks for added protection.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Friday, March 10, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council of Buffalo voted on Tuesday to send the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal “to committee for further discussion”, after citing the need for more public involvement.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a development proposal by the Savarino Construction Services Corporation, a project designed by the architect Karl Frizlen of The Frizlen Group. The hotel would be placed on the southeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo.

To make way for the project, at least five buildings located at 1109 to 1121 Elmwood Ave would be demolished. At least two properties on Forest Avenue could also be demolished. The Elmwood properties, according to Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarion Construction, are “under contract”, but it is unclear if Savarino Construction actually owns the Elmwood properties. Hans Mobius, a former mayorial candidate, is still believed to be the current owner the properties. Mobius also owns 607 Forest Avenue.

The properties 605 and 607 Forest Avenue could also be included in the proposal according to Hassett.

“We would use a Special Development Plan to rezone 1119-1121 Elmwood and 605 Forest to a C-2 zoning category,” stated Hassett. It is possible that Savarino Construction may try to obtain a variance for 605 Forest, which would allow them to enforce eminent domain, should the hotel be allowed to go forward.

The building at 607 Forest was also discussed to be rezoned, but it is unclear what the plans would be for that property. During the February 28 Common Council meeting, Hassett stated that the properties 605 and 607 were “now off the agenda”.

Pano Georgiadis, owner of Pano’s Restaurant at 1081 Elmwood, owns the property at 605 Forest and attended Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.

“Having a hotel is a bright idea. We all love the idea of a hotel, but the way that it is presented, is wishful thinking. This hotel does not fit. It’s like putting two gallons of water in a gallon jug, it does not fit. At the last meeting, the architect admitted that they are planning to put the undergound parking lot and the hotel, right at the property line. If I open my window, I will be able to touch the wall, that goes fifty feet high”, said Georgiadis.

“There is a problem having a seventy-two room hotel and fifty-five parking spaces. That means that all the other cars will spill all over the neighborhood. The footprint is simply too small. If you have a bigger [parking] lot, and a smaller hotel, I will welcome a hotel. I have a parking lot at my own business, and I am chasing people all day long. Remember, the city says it has ‘zero tolerance [for illegal parking]’. Try telling that to the guy from Albany who came to see his kids, that are going to Buffalo State, who would get tickets totaling over a hundred dollars”, added Georgiadis.

The city’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet on March 14, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. about the proposal. Although a discussion will take place, no vote is expected to be taken.

At the moment, none of the properties are zoned for a hotel. Savarino Construction plans on asking for a C2 zoning permit. If that does not work, they plan to implement a new zoning plan called a “special development plan” which would allow for only a hotel on the site. That zone would not be able to be changed.

“This [project] justifies Mobius’s refusal to invest in any maitenance[sic] or improvements”, on the properties said Clarence Carnahan, a local resident. “Where were the Council persons over the years? Where were the city inspectors over the years, to make sure that he maintained and improved his properties? The government was supposed to be protecting, not being preditorial. I see a predatorial issue here when it comes to this hotel. Over the years: Why has the local government been disfunctional when it came to Mobius’s properties? Refusal to invest in improvements, doesn’t that sound like a slumlord? Maybe I am missing a point here, but what kind of messages does this send to other slumlords that havn’t[sic] been jailed or fined? It’s [the hotel] trying to be pushed through.”

Carnahan also presented signs for residents and or business owners who are opposed to the hotel, that could be placed in windows or on stakes in the yard. Some of the signs said, ‘No tell hotel’, ‘Hans off, no hotel’, ‘It takes more than a hotel to make a village’. and ‘Keep Elmwood free, no hotel’. Carnahan plans on making more signs for a protest to be held on Saturday March 18, at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Elmwood and Forest. Some signs were given to individuals after the meeting.

“First things first, Hans is the problem, and I don’t think it has been addressed. Let’s roll back the clock on this project. What can we do with Hans? There is such thing as eminent domain, which could be of greater interest to the community, to seize the property at its lowest assessed value”, said Nancy Pollina, co-owner of Don Apparel with Patty Morris at 1119 Elmwood. “There are so many ideas that have not been explored and we are about to give this parcel away, to a big developer.”

Mobius has not returned any calls by Wikinews regarding the situation.

A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained a letter, exclusively, addressed to one of the five business owners from Hans Mobius stating:

There is a proposal to develop my property which you are currently renting. Because of opposition to this development, it does not look like it will happen. I will let you know if there any changes.

Despite the letter, there have been no plans or decisions made to end the proposal.

To date, none of the business owners or residents of 1119-1121 Elmwood have received an eviction notice.

Business owners and residents gave an indication of what they would like to see happen at the corner; a project similar to one done locally last year. There, developers renovated two buildings on Auburn and Elmwood Avenues, merging the buildings into one thus allowing for more shop space. Among some of the shops to move in after the development were Cone Five Pottery, The Ruby Slipper, and Abraham’s Jewelers. Prior to the renovation work, the left building in the picture was boarded up for several years. Many of the concerned locals would like to see a similar development on Forest and Elmwood.

Rocco Termini, a developer in Buffalo, proposed a similar design at the February 28 community meeting

In an interview after the February 28 meeting, Termini stated, “I will be willing to take a look at this myself, or I would be more than happy to be partners with Sam, Sam Savarino”, who is President and Chief Executive Officer of Savarino Construction Services Corp.

So far Savarino Construction has no plans to team up with Termini.

What Is The Right Insurance Plan For My Family?

Choosing The Right Life Insurance PlanInterested in buying permanent life insurance, but afraid you may not buy the right policy that would fit your personal situation? Buying insurance is like renting a product to help you financially in case something unexpected happens. Most permanent life insurance includes universal, variable, and whole life insurance. These policies hold a value that fits most individuals’ needs. Here are some tips to help you find the policy that will fit your lifestyle and family needs.Evaluate your families lifestyle and needs when determining the amount of life insurance you purchase. Everyone has individual life needs that will need to be addressed in the event of a family death. You must make sure that the amount of coverage is enough to care for your loved ones should this occur.Pay your premiums promptly. If the holder fails to pay the monthly premium on their insurance term, or if they decide to stop making payments before the whole life plan gains any value, they will lose the policy. They will also be forced to get a new policy and the new policy could be more expensive. This can especially be true if they have aged or fallen into poor health since their policy payments stopped.Compare your group life insurance against other policies. Group life policies, usually provided by your employer, may not always be the least expensive option. The rates are set based on averages — average age, average health and other important risk factors that may not apply to you. If you have excellent health, shop around to see if you can get better rates elsewhere.Term life insurance is a more affordable option for life insurance. It only covers you for a set period of years; it is usually sold for 10, 20, or 30 year periods. A term life insurance policy is usually much less expensive than a whole life insurance policy per month.Buy the right amount of life insurance to cover all of your living expenses and specified needs. Skimping on life insurance is not a good idea. Term insurance, especially, is very affordable, so make sure you get as much insurance as you need. As a rule of thumb, consider buying insurance that equals approximately 6 to 10 times your income. If you are considering purchasing whole life insurance, keep in mind that this insurance is more expensive, but it will cover your entire life span. If you live to be 100 years of age, you will still have coverage to benefit your family left behind after your death. A term life policy is effective only for a determined amount of time and will expire eventually. Keep in mind, a term life policy is usually less expensive and more affordable than a whole-life insurance policy, and you have the option to renew once the policy runs out.A convertibility feature is a helpful tool. It will allow you to convert your policy to a permanent one if you need one. You just have to make sure you do this before your term expires. This will let you keep your policy, and ease some stress in your life.Keep an eye out for an independent insurance agency that will really care about your needs and watch out for you. There are some life insurance companies that will offer competitive rates for some medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease and cancer). These companies are much more family friendly and don’t just put everyone in a group. Their charge is based off of what you really need. When considering a life insurance policy, be sure to do a great deal of shopping around. Some insurance providers can be more competitive price-wise due to the mass amounts of people they insure. There is also a good deal of difference on the ability of an insurer to guarantee they will be around fifty years later to pay out when it is needed. When considering life insurance, be sure to look outside of what your employer provides. While this may be easier and you may assume they are providing what is best for you, it is not always the case. It is a good solid idea to buy a life insurance policy outside of what is provided by your employer as you can’t take life insurance that is employer provided should you lose your job, find another job, etc. Make sure that they rates and coverage are competitive or better than other offers that you could go with.Did you know? If a relative of yours recently died and named you as the beneficiary on his life insurance policy, but the policy itself is missing, there are steps you can take to locate the policy, even if you don’t know which insurance company issued it. Examine the deceased’s canceled checks for any that were written to insurance companies. Look through any mail you can find for insurance bills or policy status notices. Check with former employers or organizations that the deceased belonged to which may have offered the policy. Look at tax returns for expenses or interest earned in regard to life insurance. Finally, check with the Medical Information Bureau, which has a database that can inform you if the medical records of the deceased were requested by any insurance companies since 1996.Having to think about the possibilities of something unfortunate happening to you is uncomfortable and can be very stressful. However, it is an important financial decision that should be made in order to protect your family and their future. Investing the effort and time to learn all of your options and choosing your policy will in the long run make everyone feel a lot safer and will provide you with peace of mind (the decrease in stress carries the added benefit of increasing your life expectancy).

Canadian soldiers injured in three APC crash

Monday, February 19, 2007

Thirteen Canadian soldiers sustained minor injuries yesterday when three light armoured vehicles (LAV III) smashed into each other in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The LAV IIIs are reported to have sustained minor damage.

Seven soldiers were taken to the Canadian-run provincial reconstruction base medical clinic. Six soldiers were transferred by air to the NATO hospital in Kandahar airfield.

The soldiers, who arrived in Afghanistan this month, are from the 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment and reserve units around Atlantic Canada..

“Our soldiers receive excellent training before they’re deployed to theatre, but I don’t think anything can quite fully prepare anyone for the nature of the roads here in Kandahar,” said a spokesman for the Canadian Forces, Major Dale MacEachern.

They are now safe and will return to their units in a couple of days.

Two people die after contracting H1N1 virus, number of swine flu deaths in Scotland rises to 28

Sunday, November 1, 2009

Two people have died in Scotland as a result of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. The Scottish Government revealed the information today.

Both of the victims were adults. One came from NHS Ayrshire and Arran and the other came from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. This announcement from the Scottish National Health Service (or NHS) means that the number of deaths from the virus in the country has now increased to 28.

Nicola Sturgeon, who is the current Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing in Scotland, made a statement about the situation: “I am sorry to have to announce two more deaths and my thoughts are with the patients’ loved ones at this distressing time.” Nicola said that most people who caught the virus would make a full recovery after experiencing mild symptoms of the flu and that both of the victims in this particular case had underlying health problems. Sturgeon, who is also the Deputy First Minister of Scotland said: “The vaccination is being rolled out but please wait until you are invited before visiting your GP for the vaccine.”

The History Of Vinyl Windows

By Amy Nutt

Vinyl has become a viable rival for traditional materials such as wood over the years. It has proven to be comparable to, if not more efficient in many cases, the use of windows and doors, and offers design flexibility, minimal maintenance, and efficiency in energy and cost savings.

The word “window” takes it’s origin from the Norse word “vindauga” which loosely translates to “eye for the wind’. The window was meant to be both functional as well as aesthetically pleasing.

After the end of World War II, there was a shortage of materials such as wood, aluminum and steel so the Germans, in their efforts to rebuild, began to use a vinyl framing, which was a new thermoplastic. By 1959, BF Goodrich Company, a vinyl resin manufacturer decided to try their hand at vinyl window production, and offered sleek designs similar to that found in wood or metal window frames. Americans found that these were much more readily acceptable designs, compared to that of the smaller and bulkier German designs.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtEp5yc-g3A[/youtube]

Designs improved and popularity grew; sales of vinyl grew in the mid 1990’s for both new construction and remodeling by 125%. Most window manufacturers offer vinyl windows as an option along with their more traditional wooden and metal frames. Innovations in vinyl formulas have helped to improve flexibility in designs.

With improvements having been made over the last few decades to the manufacturing process of vinyl windows, maintenance is practically non-existent and non-essential. If the product requires a bit of cleaning, common household cleaners will make short work of the task, leaving the window as good as new. The average life span of a vinyl window varies depending on the use of the item, but on average warranties are offered for 20 to 30 years. To ensure the quality of the window’s construction and performance, most vinyl windows produced today are certified by a third-party company and independent laboratory testing is performed in accordance with stringent industry standards.

Some of the newer innovations made to vinyl are the addition of sawdust and cellular foam. The wood mixed with the vinyl has made a new option of embossing the vinyl so that it looks like wood and can even be stained or painted like wood. The use of cellular foam has made huge differences in the shapes and appearances of the trims. These are great to use as they do not rot or decay at all. Vinyl windows and other products made by the same process are color fast because the color is not just on the surface but is extruded through the entire product. The product is not only rot and rust free, but is impervious to pests like ants and termites. When made properly, the product also contains UV inhibitors to protect from sun damage and cracking or splitting.

Windows made of vinyl framing are suitable for most building needs but cannot be used in high rise buildings or in places where there are consistently high winds. Tests on the windows are conducted to determine the limits the vinyl windows can withstand safely. Over the years the cost of vinyl windows has become much more affordable due to the popularity and easy accessibility to the goods required to manufacture the vinyl or vinyl composites. As a result they have become a cost effective alternative to metal and wooden frames.
